Private Jet Charter: How It Actually Works

Private aviation runs on a simple promise: the aircraft waits for you, not the reverse. Here is private jet charter and how it works — without the brochure gloss.

The experience, first

You arrive at a private terminal (an FBO) fifteen to twenty minutes before departure. No queues, no gates; a passport check over coffee, your car often parked metres from the aircraft. Luggage goes straight to the hold. You depart when you are ready — and if your morning runs late, the flight moves with you within reason.

Aircraft classes in one minute

  • Turboprops & very light jets (4–6 seats): hops under two hours — islands, alpine strips, city pairs.
  • Light jets (6–8): the European workhorse; two to three hours of range in comfort.
  • Midsize & super-midsize (8–10): full standing cabin, four to six hours — Dublin to the Greek islands nonstop.
  • Heavy & ultra-long-range (10–16): intercontinental, bedrooms on the largest — transatlantic and beyond.

What it costs, honestly

Think in occupied hours: roughly €3,000–€5,000 per hour for light jets, €5,500–€8,500 for midsize, €9,000–€15,000+ for heavy jets. A one-way is often priced as a return unless the operator can sell the empty leg — which is why flexible routing saves real money. Quotes normally include fuel, crew and standard catering; de-icing, premium catering and some airport fees can be extra. Shared among six or eight passengers, short-haul charter can approach flexible business-class fares — with three hours of your day returned.

How booking works

You give a broker or concierge the route, dates, passenger count and preferences. Within hours you receive comparable options from licensed operators — aircraft type, year, operator safety credentials, price. Sign, pay, fly; on popular city pairs this can all happen the same day, though 48–72 hours ahead widens choice. Reputable arrangements are always contracted through appropriately licensed and audited operators — if a deal avoids naming the operator, walk away.

When charter genuinely makes sense

  • Routes with no sane scheduled connection — islands, ski valleys, safari strips.
  • Groups of six-plus travelling together — a party heading for the same yacht is the classic case.
  • Time-critical days: weddings, closings, finals — and dates that cannot move, which is also when to book early.
  • Multi-city itineraries that would otherwise cost three days of airports.

Send us a route and dates — we will return honest options, including “fly scheduled, it is not worth it this time.” For where flying privately sits inside a wider trip budget, see our budget guide. Our private jet service.
