You have just planned the most complicated event of your life. The honeymoon should not feel like a second project. Here is how to plan a luxury honeymoon the calm way — the same framework we use at the concierge desk.
1. Start with the feeling, not the place
Before naming destinations, agree on the mood: total stillness, gentle adventure, culture and food, or a mix. Couples who skip this step end up compromising on a destination neither truly wanted. Two honest sentences — “I want to do nothing for a week” versus “I get bored on day three of a beach” — will design the trip for you.
2. Set the budget early, and shape it
A meaningful luxury honeymoon typically starts around €10,000 for ten days and climbs with distance, season and privacy. Decide where money matters to you: the room category you will actually enjoy, a private guide on the days that count, one unrepeatable experience — and where it does not. Our luxury travel budget guide sets out the benchmarks in detail.
3. Respect the calendar
The wedding date fixes your season, and the season should choose your destination — not the other way round. A June wedding suits the Mediterranean and East Africa; a December one favours the Maldives, the Caribbean and southern Africa — our list of the best honeymoon destinations is arranged with exactly that in mind. Marrying in monsoon season somewhere you dreamed of? Consider a “mini-moon” now and the main journey at the right time of year.
4. Build in a landing day
The most common honeymoon mistake: departing the morning after the wedding, exhausted. Give yourselves a day or two to close the wedding chapter, then leave. And structure the trip to start slow — a private villa or a beach before safari, not after the twelfth game drive.
5. Book the scarce things first
Overwater villas at the best resorts, top safari camps and iconic suites sell out six to twelve months ahead for peak dates — the full booking calendar is here. Secure the scarce pieces first; flights and the connective tissue can follow.
6. Tell everyone it is your honeymoon
Hotels and suppliers genuinely rise to the occasion — upgrades, private touches, a table that was “fully booked.” A concierge makes sure every property on the route knows, and adds the surprises you did not think to ask for.
