The Art of Packing for Luxury Travel

3 min read · Last reviewed August 2026

A calm airport terminal with luggage ready for departure

The best-travelled people we know carry the least. Packing for luxury travel is not about bringing options — it is about arriving with exactly what the trip requires and nothing that slows you down.

The capsule principle

Build around one palette (navy and cream travel best; it is not a coincidence they are our brand colours) so every piece works with every other. Aim for roughly: five tops, three bottoms, two evening options, one layer, two pairs of shoes plus sandals. Laundry exists everywhere good — villas and lodges usually include it, hotels return it in hours. Pack for five days, whatever the trip length.

Fabric is strategy

Linen and cotton for heat; merino for everything else — it breathes, resists odour and survives a suitcase week without ironing. Silk for evenings folds to nothing. Technical fabrics belong on the active days only. The iron test: if it creases in the bag and cannot be steamed in a bathroom, it stays home.

What we see go wrong, professionally

  • Hard suitcases on soft itineraries. Bush planes and yacht cabins demand soft duffels — often with a 15 kg limit. Check before you shop; life at a safari lodge and a first week afloat both explain why.
  • New shoes. The cobbled harbour town will find the blister. Nothing unworn travels.
  • Ignoring the dress code delta. Some Courchevel and city restaurants still mean jackets; the Maldives means barefoot at dinner. One smart outfit covers almost every scenario — but know which scenario you are in.
  • The just-in-case pile. If the scenario has under 20% probability and the item can be bought there, it stays home.

Destination footnotes

  • Safari: neutral colours (no black or navy in tsetse country, no white ever), a real warm layer for dawn drives, binoculars.
  • Yacht: soft bag, non-marking soles, one windproof layer — and half the clothes you planned; you will live in swimwear.
  • Ski: rent the hardware, own the boots (or have fitting arranged in-chalet), and pack proper après footwear for icy streets.
  • Wellness: the retreat provides most of it; bring slip-on shoes, a book and nothing that needs guarding — see choosing a wellness retreat.

The carry-on constitution

Medication, documents, one full change of clothes, chargers, and anything irreplaceable — checked bags enjoy adventures of their own. Photograph your packed case: insurance claims love evidence, and next trip packs itself from the picture.
